Article #3: Your Word is a lamp

Psalm 119:105 "Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (NKJV)

As individuals with a will, a mind and emotions we are but darkness and cannot see unless we are enlightened with God's Word. The Word of God is powerful, has life, and causes us to remain sane in the midst of the challenges and hurts in our world. Without the Word of God to lead us we will take ourselves to all the wrong places like we have all done in the past.

When you allow the Word of God to saturate you and build you up, the Word becomes a lamp that causes you to go in the right direction. Remember the wrong places you have gone to in the past and the consequences of that step you took in the wrong direction? Perhaps right now, you might even be going in the wrong direction. If you allow the Word to be a lamp to your feet, then and then only are you assured of going in the right direction. Going the wrong way is costly and can be avoided if and when you allow the Word of God to guide your steps.

The Word of God directs us in our work and way. The commandment is a lamp kept burning with the oil of the Spirit, as a light to direct us in the choice of our way, and the steps we take in that way. To have our soul or life continually in our hands implies constant danger of life. You don't want to do that. Why circle the mountain over and over again when you have a compass in the form of the Word to guide you straight in the direction of His will and purpose for your life.

We need the light of God's Word to guide our steps along a safe path in a dark and dangerous world. Without this light we cannot find our way. Many, however, make absolutely no use of this light of life that God has given them. They are like people driving their car at night without turning the headlights on. And what about someone who goes into the forest at night, takes his flashlight along, but without batteries? These are people who have a Bible, but never read it. Of what value is a lamp without oil, or a flashlight without batteries?

Action Exercise

1. Make a decision starting this week to spend 15-30 minutes each day in the Word of God.

2. Meditate each day on what you have read so that it causes you to take action.

3. Apply the Word to your life and allow God to change you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus I ask you to help me spend time in your Word.
Help me to apply your Word to my life. Amen.
