Article #8: Fear the Lord

Psalm 112:1 "Happy are those who fear the LORD. Yes, happy are those who delight in doing what He commands.'" (NLT)

For the unbeliever, the fear of God is the fear of the judgment of God and eternal death, which is eternal separation from God.

For the believer, the fear of God is something much different. The believer's fear is reverential fear of God. In Hebrews 12:28-29 it says, "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire.'"

This reverence and awe is exactly what the fear of God means for Christians. This is the motivating factor for us to surrender to the Creator of the Universe.

As a believer you are not to be scared of God. You have no reason to be scared of Him. You have His promise that nothing can separate you from His love. You have His promise that He will never leave you or forsake you. Fearing God means having such a reverence for Him that it has a great impact on the way you live your life. The fear of God is respecting Him, obeying Him, doing His WORD, submitting to His discipline, and worshipping Him in awe. This is true happiness!

Living a life of guilt only makes you run away from God and diminishes your faith in Christ. Delight in the LORD's commands and make His commands part and parcel of how you live your life. If you really want authentic happiness, the joy that comes from knowing that your life and actions are in alignment with His WORD, then delight in His commands.

Action Exercise

  1. Identify those things in your life that are contrary to the WORD of God.
  2. Pray and repent of these things and quit repeating them.
  3. Accept His forgiveness and forgive yourself.

Prayer: Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ I ask for your forgiveness for all the things that I have done that are contrary to your WORD. I repent and accept your forgiveness. Help me to stay focussed on your WORD and live the abundant life according to your WORD. Amen.
